Adult education teachers are often required to administer and sometimes score standardized pre- and post-tests given to students at entry to the program and at intervals thereafter. In Illinois, programs funded by the Illinois Community College Board use the TABE 11 & 12 test with ABE and ASE students. Starting on July 1, 2020, CASAS GOALS Reading and Math series will be allowed as well as TABE 11&12 for ABE/ASE students. For ESL learners, programs have a choice of test instruments: BEST Literacy, BEST Plus, or CASAS Life and Work series.
Federal and state policy, as stated in the Assessment section of the Illinois AEL Provider Manual, requires that all staff administering the approved assessments must be properly trained. Therefore, it is vital that all adult educators who administer the approved standardized student assessments receive the appropriate training.
