Excellence in Adult Education

Assessment

In many adult education programs, teachers are required to administer and sometimes score standardized pre- and post-tests which are given to students at entry to the program and at intervals thereafter. In Illinois, programs funded by the Illinois Community College Board use the TABE test with ABE and ASE students. For ESL learners, programs have a choice of test instruments: BEST Literacy, BEST Plus, or CASAS. ESL programs may use one or even two of these tests.

Scores from these standardized tests are often used to place students into classes, advance them to the next level, or transition them out of adult education. Teachers can use the test results to guide their lesson planning. All programs must pre- and post-test students and report test scores to the state, which in turn reports to the federal Department of Education’s National Reporting System (NRS). Test scores are one element that determines state and federal funding.
