WhatsApp is a great place to do collaboration in your ESL classroom. By pairing students, you can give them activities to do outside of class-time (asynchronously) and to encourage them to continue to speak and practice their language skills beyond the lesson. You can design vocabulary activities for students to do together, or even better, encourage them to create their own activities for their partners, such as gap-fill from a class reading, listing words to choose the odd one out, sharing a picture, emoji, or audio to have their classmates describe in their own words, or even doing an interview or video of somewhere they know to share with their classmates. There are so many options with WhatsApp and most international students are familiar and use it already every day to communicate.
I agree with you that using a tech format that our students are familiar with already is a good idea. I would like to incorporate some of your ideas on using whats app and also would like to explore how students can use the record function to work on their communication skills.
