I loved the ideas for creating equity in the classroom. One thing that I try to do at the beginning of class is to learn about my students. I’m a naturally shy person, so I understand how other, more reserved students might not feel comfortable talking about themselves in front of the class. So, I invite them to write on a note card something about themselves, like things they enjoy, concerns they have about their learning, and goals they have. This gives them time to think and a bit more privacy to speak to me directly. I also find it useful for incorporating ideas into my lesson planning.
Carol, this is a great idea. It is a micro change that can have a macro effect for some who may be feeling shy. I also think this is a great way to maintain the participation that some shy students may have been doing through Zoom when they start to return to in person classes. Thank you for sharing!
